One of state’s first cataract surgery implantations utilizing new lens enables 35-year-old man to regain both distance and near vision

Wang Vision 3D Cataract and LASIK Center, Nashville, Tennessee

(Nashville, TN, April 14, 2009) Brian Weist, a 35-year-old man from Mt. Juliet, suffered an electrical shock to his left eye which left him with a traumatic, blinding cataract in that eye.

Brian had sought help from many doctors and medical centers. However, due to his young age, traditional lens implantation after cataract surgery is not suitable for him, since it would debilitate Brian’s up-close reading vision which he needs for his job and livelihood.

Brain Weist

Brian was thrilled to find out about Dr. Ming Wang and the new cataract surgery lens implantation technology he was performing which would enable him to regain both distance and up-close reading vision. Dr. Wang is the director of the internationally known Wang Vision 3D Cataract and LASIK Center in Nashville, TN. A Harvard & MIT graduate (MD, magna cum laude) and one of the few eye surgeons who holds a doctorate degree in laser physics, Dr. Wang has introduced many new eye technologies, including the world’s first femtosecond laser-assisted artificial cornea implantation (Alphacor) and the state’s first bladeless all-laser LASIK. He has been involved in the research and development of many new eye reconstructive surgeries over the years, and has founded a sight restoration foundation which has helped patients from over 40 states in the US and 55 countries worldwide, with all sight restoration surgeries performed free of charge.

Dr. Wang examined Brian’s eyes on 3/30/09 at Wang Vision 3D Cataract and LASIK Center, and was able tell him the exciting good news: He would be able to help Brian with this new procedure and if successful, Brian would be able to see both far and near without the aid of reading glasses. Furthermore, with this new lens Brian’s reading ability will no longer deteriorate with age, so he will be able to see well at any distance for decades to come! Compared with the existing intraocular lenses, this new lens has three distinct advantages: 1) excellent vision in all three ranges of vision (near, intermediate and distance); 2) good vision in all lighting conditions; and 3) vision that is not affected by pupil size.

“We are very excited that we are now able to offer our cataract patients this new and powerful lens technology which will enable them to have a full range of vision for both distance and reading, and that most patients will be able to enjoy that incredible vision for the rest of their lives without deterioration due to aging,” said Dr. Wang, who is a clinical professor of ophthalmology for the University of Tennessee.

Brian’s surgery took place at the Nashville Surgery Center on the morning of Monday, April 13th , and it was a success! Today, Brian is already able to see both distance and up-close, and he will enjoy that excellent vision for the rest of his life!
