Dr. Ming Wang’s life story inspired a movie role in “God’s Not Dead 2”

(Nashville, TN, April 2016) Many were surprised to hear that the opening this past weekend of the movie “God’s Not Dead 2” brought in $7.4 million, and ranked #5 in box office ticket sales across the country. This is impressive, particularly when you consider the fact that it is a low budget, Christian faith-based movie with only a limited release (2,400 theaters).

“God’s Not Dead 2” is a sequel to the successful “God’s Not Dead,” released in 2014. The sequel is about a high school history teacher who comes under fire for answering a student's question about Jesus, and is forced to defend herself in court. The movie also portrays the stories of several other characters, including a Chinese student whose role was inspired by the real life story of one of Nashville’s own citizens, Dr. Ming Wang, MD, PhD.

The Dr. Wang-inspired character came about approximately four years ago when Dr. Rice Broocks wrote a documentary novel titled God’s Not Dead, which inspired the original movie and its sequel. The book chronicled the life stories of several individuals in their search to find God, and one of the individuals was Dr. Ming Wang.

Ming was born an atheist in China. As a teenager, he fought valiantly to escape one of history’s darkest eras – China’s ten-year catastrophe – during which millions of innocent youth were deported to remote areas to face a life sentence of poverty and hard labor. Through his own tenacity and his parents’ tireless efforts to provide a chance of freedom for their son, Ming eventually made his way to America with $50 in his pocket and an American dream in his heart, where against all odds he earned a PhD in laser physics and graduated magna cum laude with the highest honors from Harvard Medical School and MIT.

Though his beliefs were based solely in science, Dr. Wang struggled with this because science did not provide the answers to the questions in life for which he was searching. Influenced by a professor who showed him evidence of the existence of God, Dr. Wang became a Christian. Despite his parents’ objections to his pursuit of Christianity, Dr. Wang continued his journey of faith and tackled one of the most important questions of our time – are faith and science friends or foes? This led to his invention of a breakthrough biotechnology to restore sight. Dr. Wang also started a China Bible Project, which brings Bibles to his native country, China.
