Chapter ThirteenPatient AccountsThe decision to undergo LASIK refractive surgery seems to be based most often on a vocational or psychological reason, which makes it an elective procedure rather than a medical necessity. Primarily, the decision to have the surgery is the patient's, unless the surgeon determines that the patient, for medical or other reasons, would not be a good candidate. Medical studies and scientific data may provide compelling evidence in support of having LASIK vision-correction surgery performed. Nevertheless, the most convincing testimonies praising the outcomes of surgery come from the many patients who provide firsthand accounts of their successful operations that resulted in much-improved vision and a better quality of life. For the benefit of potential patients who are considering LASIK surgery, comments from several individuals with "LASIK success stories" are given in the following pages. "My recovery period was just a few days, which was a small price to pay for losing a lifelong disability. In fact, that's precisely what poor vision is a real disability. Being a chronic allergy/sinus suffer, this surgery has improved the quality of my life. Wearing contact lenses all day during allergy or smog season proved more and more difficult each year. Frankly, my eyes were hurting all the time from the environmental pollutants which were competing' with my contact lenses to torture me! "I'm amazed that I have far fewer headaches than I did before.
