How to choose a LASIK Surgeon?

Choosing a surgeon to perform your laser vision correction procedure can be difficult. Choosing the right surgeon can make a significant difference in the ultimate quality of your vision. If you are considering laser vision correction surgery, you should ask the following questions:

How long has the surgeon been performing laser vision surgeries?

A LASIK surgeon with many years of experience is preferred to a surgeon with less experience. Dr. Wang was the first surgeon in the state to perform bladeless all-laser LASIK, and for many years he was the only surgeon offering this technology, so he has significantly more experience than any other surgeon in the state.

Will your surgeon be involved with your pre-operative evaluation and available to take care of you post-operatively as well?

Your surgeon should always be available to you--before, during and after your procedure. Compared to many other surgeons who travel to many different centers, so are therefore not always available to you when you need them in any particular location, Wang Vision has only one location, so Dr. Wang sees you during your initial evaluation, he performs your procedure, he sees you again the day after your surgery, and he is always there for you if you need to see him.

Does your surgeon use the newest and best technology for his/her LASIK procedures?

Technology makes a big difference in your surgical outcome. Dr. Wang performed the world’s first 3D LASIK procedure, and Wang Vision 3D Cataract and LASIK Center is home to the most advanced, precise and accurate laser vision correction technologies available, and a leading center in the research and development of new technologies.

What questions should I ask when I am trying to identify the best surgeon for my LASIK surgery?

1.Where did the surgeon receive his/her medical education and ophthalmology training?

There is a difference between a student who is at the top of the class and an average one. Dr. Wang received his education and training from 3 of the top 4 eye institutions in the U.S.--Harvard & MIT (MD, magna cum laude), Wills Eye Hospital (ophthalmology residency) and Bascom Palmer Eye Institute (corneal fellowship).

2. Does the surgeon have any special/unique training with lasers?

Since LASIK is laser eye surgery, it is very important that a surgeon not only possesses the required medical knowledge and skills to perform your procedure, but that he/she is also an expert in the laser technology being used for your laser eye surgery, which will determine the quality of your sight for the rest of your life. Dr. Wang is one of the few cataract and LASIK surgeons in the world today who holds not only a doctorate degree in medicine, but also a doctorate degree in laser physics. Wouldn’t you prefer to have your laser eye surgery done by a laser physicist!

3. Does the center offer the most state-of-the-art technology?

Wang Vision is the ONLY center in the state that offers the most state-of-the-art laser vision technologies and is the only center that uses laser for 100% of the LASIK procedures.

  • 3D LASIK (age 18+): a digitally enhanced LASIK technology first performed in the world at Wang Vision.
  • 3D FOREVER YOUNG™ lens surgery (age 45+): the most exciting new technology to help baby boomers reduce their dependence of reading glasses or bifocals. Dr. Wang is in the process of publishing the world’s first textbook dedicated to this new technology.
  • 3D Laser Cataract Surgery (age 60+): the most state-of-the-art cataract surgery technology first introduced to the state at Wang Vision.

4. What surgical accomplishments has the surgeon achieved?

The surgeon should be at the forefront of surgical technologies. For example, Dr. Wang has performed many laser eye surgeries that were the first to be done in the world, the U.S. or the state, including the world’s first laser artificial cornea implantation, and the state’s first bladeless all-laser LASIK and the first laser cataract surgeries.

5. Has the surgeon published papers and textbooks, and has he/she been at the forefront of technology research?

This is very important since, if a surgeon is involved in research, then he/she is most likely up-to-date on the state-of-the-art technology available. Dr. Wang has published 8 textbooks and many papers, including one in the world-renowned journal “Nature”, and holds many U.S patents including the world’s first amniotic membrane contact lens. He was a former panel consultant to the U.S. FDA Ophthalmic Device Panel, and has been the principal investigator for many FDA clinical trials of new eye surgeries to improve vision. Dr. Wang has received the Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

6. Do physicians choose the surgeon for their own vision correction procedures?

Surgeons who perform the same type of eye procedures can produce vastly different visual outcomes for their patients, just as golfers can have vastly different levels of expertise in their golf games. Among the over 55,000 procedures that Dr. Wang has performed, over 4,000 were on other doctors, hence he has been called the “Doctors’ surgeon”.

7. Does the surgeon contribute to his/her community and get involved in charity work?

A physician needs to truly care for his/her patients. The surgeon should be someone who also cares about the community, and helps others in need. Dr. Wang founded a 501c(3) non-profit charity, the Wang Foundation for Sight Restoration (www.wangfoundation.com), which to date has helped patients from over 40 states and 55 countries, with all sight restoration surgeries performed free-of-charge.
