Fox 17 News, 9:00p Newscast, May 8, 2006, Anchor Laura Faber intro
"You are witnessing a surgical procedure that is the first of its kind, p ioneered by Nashville eye surgeon Ming Wang". |
Dr. Wang (to Brad): "You are doing great!" Dr. Wang's patient is Brad Barnes. A foundry explosion at his workplace twelve years ago blinded him.for what he thought.was forever.
Brad barnes: "It was 1100 pounds of 1550 degree molten aluminum. It went off like a volcano and I was over the top of it." Brad suffered burns all over his body, including his face and eyes. He thought he would live in darkness forever.
No doctor could give him hope of seeing ever again.
Dr Wang: "In the past 12 years, he has had multiple surgeries but all have failed. He was diagnosed as irreversibly blind." Dr wang hopes to change that with an innovative surgery.
The first step was a transplantation of brad's saliva gland to his eye to replace his tear ducts, which were destroyed.
Today came steps two and three. Creating a flap in brad's scarred left eye using a laser, then inserting an Alphacor artificial cornea**. Brad will have to wait for three months to see whether this surgery will actually restore his sight.
He has big plans if it does. Brad expresses his excitement: "looking forward to seeing cars, computers, technology and really the simpler things, grass, home I built, seeing the sky, the seasons .. people."
Jackie Barnes: "we're very excited .. we'll wait patiently for August for it to be unveiled."
Brad : "I wanna see my wife's face, I've never seen my wife."
**This procedure is not FDA approved and is being performed by Dr. Wang as an off-label procedure.
