What are Intacs?

Intacs may be used to reshape the eye to reduce mild amounts of nearsightedness, but in patients with keratoconus, they are used to stabilize a weakened cornea. They help restore normal shape, and allow patients to wear gas permeable lenses for better vision correction.

What are Intacs made of?

Intacs are made of the same medical polymer as contact lenses.

Who is a good candidate for Intacs?

Intacs are for candidates who have been diagnosed with keratoconus, have reduced vision in glasses, and may have trouble wearing gas perm lenses. It is better to undergo the procedure earlier than later in terms of success.

What is involved in the Intacs procedure?

In order to have Intacs implanted, the patient is given a mild sedative and eye drops to numb the eye. Channels are needed for the segments, and a small incision is made near the upper edge of the cornea using a femtosecond laser by the laser eye surgeon. The Intacs are inserted through this incision, where they will rest between the layers of tissue in the cornea, outside the central optical zone. The entire procedure takes less than 20 minutes.

How long will Intacs stay in my eye?

Intacs are intended to remain permanently in place without maintenance. However, a trained ophthalmic surgeon can remove your Intacs if required. We have not had to remove any segments to date.

Can Intacs be felt once they are in place?

No. Intacs are placed in the cornea beneath the nerve endings and cannot be felt.

Do Intacs dry out or get dirty?

No. Intacs remain in the eye and do not require any maintenance.
